Anyone who owns a motorcycle needs to think about getting motorcycle insurance. Many states in the US require you to have at least liability coverage, but some states do not. To be safe, it's a good idea to check with your insurance agent to see what your state requires. If you live in one of those 45 states that requires liability insurance, it is in your best interest to take out a policy. You may think you are a very good and safe driver and could never cause a collision, but accidents happen every day. That's why they are not called on purposes! No one means to have or cause an accident, but causing one without liability insurance can cost you a lot of money for the other party's medical bills, auto and property damage, lost wages and more. There are several things that can influence the rate that you will end up paying for your motorcycle insurance. The state you live in, your driving record (in an automobile as well as on a motorcycle), how old your motorcycle is, where you store your bike when not riding it, and if you graduated from a motorcycle safety and/or driving course can all make a difference in how much your policy will cost you. You'll find that many insurance companies will give you a discount of anywhere from 10 to 15 percent on your motorcycle insurance if you can prove you have successfully completed a course for driver training or safety. Anyone who rides a motorcycle and is under the age of 25 is almost always thought of as a higher risk, and so is charged a higher premium. Help yourself save some money by taking one of these courses. In addition, if you have already had one or more accidents on your motorcycle, it would probably help improve the rate you have to pay. Anyone who has been riding a motorcycle for a long time and has experience, or is a mature individual with experience may qualify for a discount on his or her insurance. In addition, being a member of an established motorcycle association can get you a discount as well. Depending on where you live and the insurance company that you choose, you discount can be anywhere from 10 to 20 percent. Not all insurance companies offer these discounts, so it pays to check with your agent to see if the company you chose has any discounts such as these that you can take advantage of.
